Town Allows Homeless to Live on Property!

Last week neighbors noticed that a homeless man was living on the front porch of the building right next to the Police Department. Some thought this was odd because surely the Police would have noticed and asked the homeless guy to move on??

Concerned residents called the non-emergency number for Prince William County Police. This is the number you call to get Haymarket Police to respond to calls in the town. Well, you guessed it, NO ONE was working in Haymarket! A Prince William County Officer had to respond once again to take a call in Haymarket. He approached the Homeless gentleman who stated that he had been living there (on the front porch) for several weeks. Now this is the best part....

Town acting as a landlord.

Who heard about the special meeting called last week to address the flood damage and mold in the Dominion office space next to Town Hall?

Who else knows about the trailer that they have parked beside Town Hall while the Town spends somewhere close to $35,000 to clean the building out and repair it?

Who else knows that the Council decided to put the trailer there without the special use permit needed by the Town Code?

You know, it cost $725 plus legal fees ($140 an hour) just to have that special meeting to address the topic of spending money for the repairs?

Who else knows that the Town has yet to even make $35k on the lease of that office space?

Council loses $25k !!!

WOW! The Town Council was evidently tired of negotiating with a current tenant and instead decided to continue to allow them to lease prime space for WAY below market rates. As such, the Town is going to continue to lease about 4,000 sq feet of space for $6 a sq foot for the next fiscal year - when the negotiations had so far been making progress to double that rate for next year. And triple it for the following year.

All told, the Council threw away $25k for 06/07 and another $25k for 07/08. And to think, the Council is struggling with their budget work sessions to find money for capital improvements!!!

Placement of Town Hall

This exerpt is from Planning Commissioners Journal. If we move to the Sears house keep in mind that no one will drive up to the Sears house, do their town business, and then walk to nearby businesses.

Read excerpt from article:

People appreciate public buildings that express the dignity, permanence, and importance of civic institutions, and which harmonize with their surroundings. In recent years, there have been a growing number of instances where communities have demanded higher quality in the design of new public buildings and resisted efforts to move post offices, city halls, and other civic institutions to out-of-the-way locations.
