John Cole Resigns

Haymarket Town Council

John Cole, who left town back in early February to go overseas for a civilian DOD job, has decided to vacate his position on Town Council as of last Thursday.

Why he had originally desired to hold onto his position from half a world away is beyond anyone's scope of reasoning. He is going to be gone until at least August, so the right thing to do is to step down. The Town Charter provides for 6 council members to meet to discuss Town business...not 5 and one overseas.

The question now becomes, does the Council fill his spot?

election

Does he plan to run again for the next election? He should have done the right thing when he left and stepped down from his position. Are there any people on the council that can think clearly enough to make the correct decisions for what is best for the town? The mayor has made poor decisions ever since she came into office. Weir has made a circus display of his behavior in front of the town and Prince William. Yet, all three want to run again and because nobody has the time to waste on the a corrupt town, the exact same people will once again be in charge to destroy the town one piece at a time.

Cole's empty seat - continued

They need to fill the spot, especially since Mr. Kennedy has resubmitted his contract to purchase the property. The Charter mandates that a vote of 3/4 of the full Council is needed to sell the land. 3/4 of 6 is 5 and with Bob Weir being against the sale, they need another yes vote. John Cole could not have voted from overseas, so he had to resign so they can get another "yes" vote on Council.

A quick call to Town Hall today and found out Jay Tobias and Ellie Cole (John's wife) have submitted letters of interest to fill John's vacancy.

Hmmm, we know how Mrs. Cole would vote on the sale, but what about Jay?

Cole's empty seat

Assuming Mrs. Cole voted yes to approve the sale, which can be assumed she would - would Bob Weir stomp out and resign again because of the backhanded way the Mayor got her yes votes?

If Bob knew the sale would be approved, could he just prevent it from moving forward again like he is accused of doing in the Planning Commission meeting? He and the PC Chair had the same views on the project from the getgo and neither liked the Council dictating to them how the deal would need to go down.
