Restaurant Tax in Haymarket?

A public hearing will be held on Feb. 5 to discuss a potential restaurant tax in the Town of Haymarket.

The potential tax could be used to fund “development and capital improvements,” according to John Cole, Haymarket’s vice mayor.

However, he said, “Taxes are always a serious matter and should only be considered with all the facts at hand,” which is why the town council is hoping residents will provide input at the hearing.

The 7 p.m. hearing is designed “to gather facts, opinions, and feelings about it so we can fully evaluate its potential.” Council will not vote on whether to impose the tax at that meeting.

However, Cole and Mayor Pam Stutz encourage town residents to come and speak out on the issue at the hearing, held at town hall, 15000 Washington Street.

Fiscally Irresponsible? Meals Tax?

Let me get this straight, the citizens of haymarket are going to have to pay extra to eat in the town because the town council is fiscally irresponsible?

Maybe if you hadn't spent $18,000 on Haymarket Day last year or several thousand dollars on a survey about the town that you NEVER used, you would have extra money.

Stop wasting our money! If you pass a meals tax, I will just go to Somerset Crossing and eat instead of in the town.

From what I read on this board, you are paying the police overtime for no reason also. Save some money and stop that!

Do the right thing and stop wasting money. Reel in the P.D's budget that they haven't spent yet. Don't let them make an end of year splurge like the always do. (Someone informed me that they always wait until the last two months of the fiscal year to spend all of their money and then they just buy frivolous items.)

Wake up!!

Meals Tax

I'm not opposed to the tax. I think that any revenue that can be generated will be good. A lot on non-residents eat in Town. Let them help pay for services too. Maybe the Council will finally get anough money to fix the roads and crosswalks.
