HAYMARKET, Va. -- At the Haymarket Town Council meeting Monday night, embattled Police Chief Jim Roop offered his resignation, but in a 5-1 vote, the council voted not to accept it.

News4 first reported that Roop and another officer had been suspended without pay last June. But city officials declined to say why.

And in addition to the 15-day suspension, fearing the possibility of reprisals, the chief's administrative powers were also taken away.

The council recently returned Roop's administrative powers, but Roop offered his written resignation, telling the council, "Fire me or get behind me."

Monday night, Roop told News4 reporter Tony Dorsey, "One of my officers made the accusation that I told a dirty joke." Roop said the accusation was false.

At the Town Council meeting, Roop's supporters gave the council an earful. "I think that this is a crime, the way they've been treated and that the shenanigans that have been entertained by this council and the things that are on the Internet and the Web sites and are being told to the papers are complete fallacies," one supporter said.

But Councilman Jay Tobias did not agree with Roop's supporters. "I'd like to see the chief resign and separate ways with the town and for us to move forward with some new life and some new blood in the department," Tobias said.

dishonest??

In my opinion, when you go on the local TV and in the local press to state that you never did something that everyone who knows you knows that you have done, you are not just dishonest, but a liar!

Jokes of Jim's

I hear that the Chief told a dirty joke to the Previous Mayor and a coucil member in the Mayor's office just prior to going in front of the entire council at which time he denied ever telling any dirty jokes to anyone. Does anyone else see a pattern here?
The latest joke I heard the Chief tell(in Uniform)was as I was standing in the Sheetz store in Town. The Chief asked an officer with him "hey what is this" at which time he placed a dollar bill under his chin and hung his hands down by his side. He then stated "It's Christopher Reeves at a Ti**y Bar" to which he then laughed at himself. This was in December 2005. (Good thing no handicap people were around)
I bet if you ask him about it he will deny it though !!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way doesn't Sheetz have cameras ?

I found it funny

I found that joke kinda funny, and aside from the T*TTY it is not a dirty joke. Why don't we try and find something better to try and get him on.

T*TTY

x1usmc,

Tell the truth... Would you trust this guy with your wife alone ?

It's not the fact of "is it a dirty joke or not".

It is the fact that it was told in a public place where anyone could see and hear by a man in uniform. It was more degrading to cripple people than being dirty in my opinion.

I have an Aunt who was paralyzide from a vehicle accident so I found the joke "not too funny". I also volunteer at a handicap facility in the area and I am sure none of those individuals would find it funny either.

I am not trying to get him. I was just stating what I heard at the sheetz. But as you and I both know it would do no good to complain to anyone in this town because most of them are covering for one another.

why aren't you spelling the

why aren't you spelling the word titty?

he just wants to be like his

he just wants to be like his mayor and council people.

In the military

In the military, we had a saying "Trust me with your life, but not your money or your wife."

If we are to firgive Officer Hoffman (ret.), for his bad judgement call for guarding the upper level of a illegal casino. Then we should forgive Jim for telling a bad joke in the wrong place.

While we are on judgement calls, wouldn't this fall under a former police officer who gives advice to someone to help them out of legal trouble.

But then again, forgive and forget

it goes beyond

it goes beyond the telling of distasteful jokes. the chief threw out a friend. a friend who was by his side many times for over 10 years. jim one question, when you were in that nearly fatal accident a few years ago, who visited you almost every week at your house?

its about loyalties and friendships. He didnt fight for the one guy, who wether he realised it or not, was a friend to him. When I first met the chief, my impression was how much alike him and Bobby were. very rough and tough men who didn't take crap from anyone and always had each others back.

The one thing to never be forgiven, is the back stabbing of a friend. a friend who cared about you.
