HAYMARKET, Va. -- At the Haymarket Town Council meeting Monday night, embattled Police Chief Jim Roop offered his resignation, but in a 5-1 vote, the council voted not to accept it.
News4 first reported that Roop and another officer had been suspended without pay last June. But city officials declined to say why.
And in addition to the 15-day suspension, fearing the possibility of reprisals, the chief's administrative powers were also taken away.
The council recently returned Roop's administrative powers, but Roop offered his written resignation, telling the council, "Fire me or get behind me."
Monday night, Roop told News4 reporter Tony Dorsey, "One of my officers made the accusation that I told a dirty joke." Roop said the accusation was false.
At the Town Council meeting, Roop's supporters gave the council an earful. "I think that this is a crime, the way they've been treated and that the shenanigans that have been entertained by this council and the things that are on the Internet and the Web sites and are being told to the papers are complete fallacies," one supporter said.
But Councilman Jay Tobias did not agree with Roop's supporters. "I'd like to see the chief resign and separate ways with the town and for us to move forward with some new life and some new blood in the department," Tobias said.
