Although Haymarket Town Council and mayoral candidates may differ on some issues, they all agree on one thing - they want to preserve the quaint, small-town character.

Eight of the 10 council candidates and both mayoral candidates showed up to address town issues at a candidate forum Thursday night.

They all addressed development, use of the Harrover property and how to handle personnel matters.

Mayoral candidate Tim Benjamin said he wants to preserve the town's historical landmarks and would like to see a municipal center at the Harrover property.

He said he'd like to see the town's police department, town hall and other municipal facilities at Harrover, in addition to green space for recreation.

Incumbent mayor Pam Stutz said she wants to continue working with Prince William County on proposed developments near the town and agreed with Benjamin's proposed uses for the Harrover property.

On personnel, Stutz proposed hiring a town manager to handle such issues.

Benjamin said he "won't stand idly by" when it comes to personnel matters and promised to be open and honest.

Many council candidates agreed on making the town more pedestrian-friendly, but some differed on....

I too was there

I too was there for the candidates forum. I found it very interesting. Not so much the questions…they were rather tame (translated lame) and the answers from all candidates were equally. What was most fascinating was the dynamic of the room and the language and body language of some of the candidates. It was interesting that all but one of the candidates on the current council sat in the front row. Mr. Tobias and (outgoing council )Mr. Garcia and the new candidates stood at the rear of the room often whispering amongst themselves. The battle lines were clearly drawn. The body language of some of the candidates was fascinating. Some were open and welcoming. Others seemed to stand at the podium with the proverbial arms crossed. The “theys” and “thems” were prevalent in some of the candidate’s oratory. It was all very enlightening. The answers, as stated in the newspaper article were all cookie cutter. Everyone has the same vision for the town. What I had hoped to see was a new plan of how to achieve that vision. Unfortunately I did not get that result.

I’ve been on the fence like others on this forum. I have been voraciously reading anything and everything I can to try and formulate an informed decision. Unfortunately I have not seen anything but propaganda and hear-say. No hard evidence to support or impugn anybody. At this point my vote would be: (Please note this is MY OPINION, I realize it will be considered blasphemy on this site) Pam Stutz..yes, Tim Benjamin..no, (Only because she has the prior experience) John Cole..yes, Bob Wier..yes, Shiela Jarboe..maybe, (Same reasons, Cole was impressive) Jay Tobias..no, (not a team player, confrontational) Natasha Sikorsky..yes, (every group needs a cheerleader) Ozzie Vasquez..yes, Susan Shurynn..yes, (their corporate experience would bring some order to the confusion) Robert Hoffman..no, (he is just a puppet in this) Vicki Benjamin…..no idea since she chose not to speak, Nicky Tessitore….no idea she was not there, Johnson…no idea he was not there. Maybe my opinions will change in the coming days if someone shows me something revolutionary. My invitation to step up on my porch and let’s talk is still open. No one has come by yet.

I hope you reconsider your

I hope you reconsider your mayor vote.

CommonFolk

Blasphemy?

I agree with some of your positions. I would vote for Cole & Tasha also. I am confused about Stutz though. You would vote for someone that has lied to the Public and Town Council only because they have prior experience? She has 8 months experience being Mayor. Look what a shambles this town has been in for those 8 months.

As far as Tobias, maybe not a team player, but I would vote for him just because he states what is on his mind and doesn't let anyone sway it. Some council members tend to follow the herd if you know what I mean.

Just a thought.

Didn't say

I didn't say I could not be swayed. I need more information. I can't condemn Mayor Stutz based on a newspaper article that uses this website and a posting from an annonymous source. I need something more. She has more experience as far as the operations of the town since she has served on previous councils. I could not figure out what Mr. Benjamin is bringing to the position based on what I heard at the Forum or have read.

I was there Thursday night

All in all, I found the forum enlightening.Too bad there weren't more Haymarket voters there.

I applaud all of the incumbents and candidates who participated.I wonder why some of the candidates weren't present, and if they are actually serious about running or about what the voters think.

I've got to say that my opinions of the candidates changed several times throughout.
The only thing I observed that was somewhat disturbing was the lack of consideration and respect shown by the on duty police officers and the chief , for talking and laughing loudly right outside the door during what was supposed to be a forum with citizens trying to hear and listen to all of the candidates without distraction(in fairness to all)

I get the feeling that the chief doesnt take the council seriously. He should.

Don't know who I am voting for yet-I see many resons to retain the current council and Mayor, yet the need to do something about the PD is painfully evident, and I don't know if any of them will address that.

I agree with you Amused

I agree with you Amused about the disruption outside on Thursday night. It was almost embarrassing. I am surprised more residents did not attend.

Chief & Sgt. Intimidating Voters Again?

I figured the Chief & Sgt were at the forum to instruct the Voters once again (while they are working and in uniform) how they should place their votes on Election Day.

Why would you have 4 police officers working the night of the election forum? Does this Chief not know how to schedule employees? One night he has no officers, the next night he has four officers. I think they make software to help you schedule 4 employees.

Was he there to intimidate voters once again as he did in the letter he passed out to all residents. Town taxpayers, do you realize that you paid for the chief to pass out those letters while he was working?

Unbelieveable!

Too Many Officers?

Didn't the Mayor state in a News article that the Auxiliary Police force was suspended because they had overlapping shifts?

If you use the Mayors logic, we should get rid of the Chief and the Sergeant because they are overlapping with the other guys working. LOL

Anyway on a serious note, why would you get rid of FREE labor/PROTECTION whether or not it overlaps? (which isn't the whole truth - if you find that surprising coming from the Mayor)

It is funny how the town doesn't have a problem with the Auxiliary Police force until one of the Officers decides to run for Mayor. Then all of a sudden, it needs to be suspended.

Seems kinda odd.....

There have been lots of

There have been lots of contradiction lately.

I agree.

There is no such thing as having too much protection. Before I actually lived and worked in this town I had the belief that it being a small town not a whole lot went on criminal wise. But lately I've changed my mind. People walking out of a store with cases of stolen beer. Someone getting a car stolen. I've noticed the smaller and quieter the town seems the more people can get away with. A few more of our men in blue would make me feel alot safer.

back to the original issue

So why were ANY of them there, other than to disrupt things.Or look tough. Or intimidate people (council members AND the public)
